Color in Layers: Exploring the Magic of the Risograph Duplicator

In this class, we will explore the perks and limitations of printing with riso. We’ll cover everything from choosing the right paper for your project, to processing digital designs for print, the specifics of fine-tuning settings on the machine, and tips for working within the bounds of this medium to produce beautiful multicolor art prints, zines, posters etc. Each student will have the opportunity to develop their own design from scratch or make use of an existing graphic with the ultimate goal of choosing a color palette and printing an edition of 25 art prints by the end of the workshop. The instructor will outline how to separate designs into individual color layers using Photoshop if needed, as well as physical techniques for creating color layers with the use of tracing paper. Other experimental techniques will be discussed, including playful uses of the scanner bed, incorporating interesting texture layers into designs, and messing with non-traditional compositions in color.

About the Instructor
Erk Frankenstein is a printmaker and graphic artist who runs a small print shop here in Sacramento called Dat Grain. He began exploring graphic design while volunteering with the UC Davis campus radio station (KDVS) as a means of promoting local music and art events. After learning some diy screenprinting techniques to print flyers and merch for local bands, Erk was hired at a silkscreen shop where he worked for several years, exploring the specifics of translating graphics into printed matter. More recently, Erk has helped start Trash Day Press, a small print operation focused on hand-bound collaborative zine projects that are printed primarily using risograph duplicators. Trash Day also helps produce pamphlets and revolutionary reading materials for local grassroots organizations in Sacramento. Now with roughly 10 years of printmaking experience, Erk is committed to helping local orgs, small businesses, artists & musicians produce quality printed materials, while also promoting the therapeutic practices of mark making, collage, rubber stamps, and zine-making among others.

Cancellation and Refunds Policy
Verge Center for the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes, to change instructors, and to make other changes that may become necessary to ensure a quality experience for participants. In the event that a class is canceled, we will contact all registrants and offer the option of transferring to another available session, or receiving a full refund.
If a participant wishes to withdraw from a class, they must do so in writing at least seven days prior to the first class meeting to receive a full refund, less a $25 processing fee. Withdrawals occurring within seven days prior to the first class meeting will receive a refund of 50 percent of the total class fee. No refunds are given to withdrawals that occur 24 hours before the class begins. Transfers are not accepted after a class begins. Membership fees are non-refundable. Please note we are unable to issue cash refunds.
