Introduction to Sculptural Handbuilding explores nontraditional forms that focus on expression through shape. In this 3-session class, you will brainstorm what inspires you to create–your life experiences, the love of art, or just for fun–and use that inspiration to make beautiful ceramic art! The goal of this class is to empower people to create art they are proud of, to make something to connect to and display in their homes. Tess will teach you different handbuilding techniques such as coiling and slab work and take you step-by-step through the process of creating, trimming, and glazing your ceramic piece. You’ll choose what to make, whether it’s a household item you can actually use such as a cup, bowl or vase or something more decorative and abstract. All finished pieces will be fired and available to pick up at a later date. This class is designed for artists of all levels so whether it’s your 1st or 100th time, come out and create with creatives alike!

About the instructor
Tess Chatfield is a recent graduate of Columbus College of Art & Design where she has achieved her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus in ceramic art. Tess has been an artist in residence at La Botanica with the company R.A.R.O in Barcelona, Spain. During the duration of her residency, she worked towards an exhibition that had a grand opening at the end of the program. With R.A.R.O, Tess attended and led artist talks, becoming more involved with the local art scene. Currently, Tess is wrapping up a show titled “Longing for the West” a show where the art focuses on nostalgia from leaving a place where one felt connected to the land while growing into adulthood, specifically inspired by the American South West and the time Tess spent during her coming-of-age years.
