This mug-nificent class will take place in the Verge classroom over 3 days. The goal of this course is to guide beginner potters through the entire process of throwing a cup on the wheel as well as pulling a handle. The process has many steps that Tait will break down into easily understandable components. In the first session, you will learn how to center the clay and probably make at least one cup. During the second session, the cups will be trimmed (adding a foot), you will then learn the craft of pulling and attaching a handle. We will do the first firing (bisque firing) of your mug and during the final session, you will learn all the basics of finishing and glazing your creations. Staff will then fire everything you finish for you to pick up at a later date. No previous experience is necessary.  This course is geared toward beginners but is also appropriate for someone who needs a refresher and an introduction to the facilities at Verge’s Clay Lab.

About the teaching artist

Tait Rasmusson is a regular in our weekly Clay Labs and has mastered the art of pulling long elaborate handles for his beautifully styled teapots and cups. He has 5 years experience as a self-taught potter, 3 years experience as a barista, and spent 2 years as a researcher for the Global Tea Initiative at UC Davis. Combining his expertise in these 3 arenas, Tait builds coffee and teaware that works better than commercially manufactured alternatives. Check out his work here:

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS POLICY

Verge Center for the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes, to change instructors, and to make other changes that may become necessary to ensure a quality experience for participants. In the event that a class is canceled, we will contact all registrants and offer the option of transferring to another available session, or receiving a full refund.

If a participant wishes to withdraw from a class, they must do so in writing at least seven days prior to the first class meeting to receive a full refund, less a $25 processing fee. Withdrawals occurring within seven days prior to the first class meeting will receive a refund of 50 percent of the total class fee. No refunds are given to withdrawals that occur 24 hours before the class begins. Transfers are not accepted after a class begins. Membership fees are non-refundable. Please note we are unable to issue cash refunds.
