Lisa Oxley

As a painter with an expanded multi-disciplinary approach, my work often includes drawing, installation, and time-based media.  I am particularly interested in the relationship between painting and architecture; how a painting is received perceptually in its space.

I construct my pictures from material taken from various sources: museums, zoos, theatres and natural history dioramas, abandoned corporate offices, landscape photographs; places that enclose a certain activity or idea. At the same time, the pictures are also typological allegories of painterly signs, which depict spaces of exhibition. I investigate the image though a reiteration process where I may go from a photo to a painting, to a drawing of the painting, and back to a painting of the drawing. In each of these iterations, an emptying of the image takes place, and with it, a further investigation of the semiotics of painting, and of what it means to paint images. This emptying out is perhaps painting reflecting upon itself. In my work there is an oscillation between the two poles of painting that represents, and of painting that reflects on itself.
