Joanne Tepper Saffren works across a multitude of disciplines to create installations from visual surfaces, physical forms and the space between. She constructs her works by hand, building objects and environments that reference feminine domestic space, from everyday materials including paint, wood, upholstery, foam, photographs, plants, found objects, paintings, hand made ceramics, prints and writing. Driven by experimentation and practice, she explores the intuitive process and the expression of making as a visual projection of our paradoxical environment. Born in Los Angeles, she received her BFA in 1978 from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, was a teaching artist at The Art Institute of California—Sacramento from 2008 to 2013 and received her MFA in 2018 from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
