Parents and Guardians,

After extensive consideration for the health and safety of the Verge community, we have decided to switch the direction of our camps into an online experience. There is a potential that as things progress we will add on a few weeks of in-person camps at the end of the Summer but we cannot yet be certain.

We are still working out the structure and specifics.

When:

This class is from July 20-24th.

Our camp schedule will change from an all-day camp to 3-hour live sessions, in the mornings, and an “open office hour” afterward.

How:

We will be using a combination of two platforms, Zoom and Edmodo. We will send you all information about setting up accounts on those two as soon as possible. Zoom will facilitate online face-to-face interactions through an iPad or computer and will serve as a tool for instruction, demonstrations, and other engagement. Edmodo will be a platform to share tutorials, videos, alternative activities etc. so parents and kids can access them anytime.

We will make a materials pack at Verge that can be picked up by guardians.  In-Store Shopping & Curbside Pickup are available at Blick Art Supplies at their Howe Ave location if you would like extra supplies.

Requirements:

  • Access to an Ipad or computer
  • Access to the internet
  • Zoom and Edmodo accounts (both are free)
  • Guardian involvement for at least the first 30 minutes-1hour
  • A clean working surface to make art close to the computer

Refunds and new prices:

We understand this shift is not ideal for all children and families so we will be accepting full and partial refund requests and processing them on a case-by-case basis. If you cannot join our online camps, we hope you consider making your registration fees, or part of them, a donation to Verge.

Since our hours have changed so have our prices which will now be the following:

Verge Member — $150.00

Non-member — $180.00

Add a sibling (member) — $115.00

Add a sibling (non-member) — $140.00

About this class:

It Figures!

Using creativity and the power of observation, students will make avatars of themselves (and friends), construct superheroes ready to change the world, and make their own t-shirt or fabric designs. We’ll learn how to draw all the parts of the face, about proportions, how to draw bodies in action as well as how to get the most out of basic tools like pencils and markers. Students will learn about how to create drawings with more personal meaning, about making drawing easier through shape recognition, and about how to lay out a dynamic picture.

About the Teaching Artist

Melanie Bown is an artist and high school arts educator in Sacramento, CA. Additionally, she has spent many years teaching younger students in museums and non-profit settings as well as facilitating artists with disabilities. Her own work spans many mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fabric work, and photography. It often discusses moods or processes, sometimes through visual flow charts or metaphors. There is often humor mixed in with more serious contemplations with the work being considered an unfiltered conversation with the viewer.

Scholarships

Financial aid scholarships are available for students in the Sacramento area who qualify for a free or reduced lunch at school. Please email education@vergecontemporary.org to apply for a scholarship.

Refunds

Verge Center for the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes, to change instructors, and to make other changes that may become necessary to ensure a quality experience for participants. In the event that a class is canceled, we will contact all registrants and offer the option of transferring to another available session, or receiving a full refund.

If a participant wishes to withdraw from a class, he or she must do so in writing at least seven days prior to the first class meeting to receive a full refund, less a $25 processing fee. Withdrawals occurring within seven days prior to the first class meeting will receive a refund of 50 percent of the total class fee. No refunds are given on withdrawals once the class begins. Transfers are not accepted after class begins. Membership fees are non-refundable. Please note we are unable to issue cash refunds.
